PART 2: COAL

I have read pages 71-128 for part two of COAL.

Okay let me start off by saying people were CRAZY back then!
BACK in the day they had to transport coal on lil boats made of wood. probably something like this ---------------------------------------->

Most of the time the coal barrels would fall out. (WHAT A WASTE)

LOL but this one time a rock poked a hole in the boat so the men in the boat had to quickly take of their clothes to plug the whole. So they ended up arriving almost naked to their destination...but they arrived at least.

As you can tell that was a problem. So these 2 men Josiah White and Erskine Hazard and with the help of there workers built 12 small dams in this river and built a road so they can better transport their coal. And it only took them 3 years. THATS CRAZY!
All this was is one chapter.

In the next chapter it was explaining how wood burning trains worked. You think whats wrong with that but let me tell you that there were some MAJOR problems.

So here is a picture of one might look like------>

Problems

  • Let out many little fire sparks
  • B/C of ^it set surrounding areas on fire
  • Since most carts were roofless the passengers would get burned
  • Ruined passengers clothes

COAL: A HUMAN HISTORY

Okay I finally have time to post!!!
First off i'm going to say that my first choice was to read Garbage Wars....but it wasn't in stock. Second choice was Dumping in Dixie..........again wasn't in stock. So I was left with my third choice Coal by Barbara Freese. So far I have read pages 1-69.

Its funny how someone can write a book all about coal. I was surprised to read and it really be all about coal. I thought their was going to be some other story the auther was going to tell , but no the story so far is REALLY ALL ABOUT COAL.

note: I would have never picked up this book on my own.

It goes back as far as 1306. Now thats some history. It talks about how coal can be compared to oil and how everyone wants to strike oil but nobody wants to find a lump of coal. But as i continue reading I realize how imortant coal actually is or was, although it does contribute to global warming when burned.

I feel like the book is going to tell me about how coal can be very usefull at times but also on the other hand very destructive. And most of the time they go hand in hand.

Coal mining has been one of the topics that has intrigued me so far. It was talking about how coal miners faced the chance of death every day. And facing death by all four elements: earth, fire, water, and air. It's crazy how people would actually do this jop with such a huge chance of dieing and if not dieing facing bad health problems later on just for a little bit of coal.

Thats all i gotta say so far......until i read more about COALLLL.

coal Coal COAL!!!!!!!!!!!-yAY!
